No plan and no purpose time is necessary, but when was the last time you actually had some? We live in a time where everything is scheduled with your phone sending constant reminders of what you need to do next. So, when was the last time you were in the now?
How long has it been since you had a week, a weekend, or even a day that was just for the reason of being alive? Besides being sick, when was the last time that no one was expecting anything from you? Hell, when was the last time that YOU didn’t expect anything from you? Is There Another Way?
What if real life isn’t about running through a grinder of to-do lists? Many people tend to believe that everything, every day, should have a plan and a purpose, or it’s not a day well spent. We have an entire website of ways to bring perspective, purpose, and plan into your life. So we aren’t saying that it is a bad thing. However, sometimes we all need to just be in the moment, be in our day, and be fully engaged in…just being.
No plan and no purpose time is necessary. But how do you do it without losing momentum? How do you do it without feeling guilty or just feeling like a slug? We humans seem to be able to do almost anything if we know why we’re doing it. What if spending a day without purpose is ironically…part of your purpose? We have some good reasons to get you started.
#1 Why “No Plan And No Purpose” Time Is Necessary: You Need A Break!
We have no idea what’s happening in your life right this very minute. But unless you are reading this blog on a beach…you probably need a break. Life is vast and has numerous moving parts. Even when wonderful things are happening, such as weddings, new homes, new jobs, and new babies, things can still get stressful.
We also tend to ask more and expect more of ourselves than we do of others. Because of that, we sometimes just need a break with no plan and no purpose. Of course, this would be wonderful on a beach or a cabin in the woods. But it can also be time on your porch with a good book and a blankie for the day. It doesn’t matter how you choose to create it or how much money you spend. What matters is the chance to have no purpose but to breathe and be…the real you (Click here to see our The Real You Video.)
#2 Why “No Plan And No Purpose” Time Is Necessary: You’re Not Gonna Get Stuck Here.
One reason we may be afraid to have some time with no plan and no purpose is that we worry that if we slow down, we will get stuck. We tell ourselves this story that it’s like riding a bike. The slower you go, the harder it is to stay upright. Then, we are afraid that if we stop, we might fall over the handlebars and…skinned knees hurt.
There is a particular fear in most of us that if we slow down and take a break, we will fall behind. We are afraid of losing momentum. We believe that if we stop, we may simply remain there and never accomplish anything useful or purposeful again. But we promise you that no purpose and no plan time will leave you feeling rejuvenated, not stuck.
Actually The Opposite Is True.
The opposite is more likely true. When you take a break, step away from all your problems and projects, something cool happens. You gain a new perspective and a clearer understanding of what’s happening. You rejuvenate your nervous system and rest your body. Now you are supercharged for whatever needs to happen next.
Having no plan and no purpose time seems like it would get you behind. However, it propels you further with new energy and a clear mind. There’s a reason we all got recess in elementary school. We need some downtime to maintain our uptime. #3 Why That “No Plan And No Purpose” Time Is Necessary: You Need To Know How To Be A Dial Instead Of A Switch.
If we aren’t careful, we can start seeing ourselves like a switch on the wall that turns the ceiling fan on every day and off every night. When you treat yourself like a switch, you’re either on or off. You’re either going full tilt and full force or sick in bed. You are either overdoing it or lying on the couch watching sitcom reruns. For a switch, everything is on or off.
Try Being A Dial.
What if you didn’t manage your time like an on-off switch, creating all or nothing? On a dial, there are numerous numbers, clicks, and speeds ranging from 1 to 10. What if you could run at a 5 or 6? On a heavy day, you could run at a 4. On a day with no purpose and no plan, you could run at a 2. If you felt you needed to be more focused or active, you could adjust your focus by moving yourself up one click at a time. You could find a nice, happy 8 to operate from your productive little dial self.
You will be amazed at how much more productive you will be when you operate as a dial. You will also be surprised at how much easier it is to navigate your energy and get more done with less. A significant book on this topic by a man who has lived the process is Slowing Down To The Speed Of Joy. You will love how he explains slowing down to have a bigger and better life.
#4 Why That “No Plan And No Purpose” Time Is Necessary: You Can Take A Break And Still Hold Purpose And Intentions.
Wanting to make a difference is incredible! Wanting to be of service is admirable. Wanting to feel like your life is full of purpose and intention is…part of what life is about. So, don’t think we’re saying to push any of that aside. Taking a break is not the same as throwing in the towel and saying, “I’m out!”
Having some time with no plan and no purpose time may help you become clearer on your purpose. It may create space in your mind to think more creatively. It may add space to your nervous system to take on that dream project. Burning yourself out and wearing yourself down will not enhance your ideas and intentions. It may also cause you to burn out before you accomplish anything purposeful.
No plan and no purpose time is necessary to add to your purpose and expand on your intentions. Give yourself a break and be amazed at what you have space to dream about and consider.
#5 Why That “No Plan And No Purpose” Time Is Necessary: There Is No Such Thing As Wasted Time If It Is Making Your Life Better.
No plan and no purpose time is not wasting time, and it’s not wasted time. Time is a tricky thing, no matter how you come at it. Scientists tell us time may not even be a real thing. But anything that gives you comfort, healing, and rest is not wasted time. It’s refill time.
You never tell your car that it’s had enough gas this month. It will just have to figure it out. You give it whatever it needs to get you to the next place. Well, sometimes a day off, a week off, or just an afternoon nap is just that…gas.
You Deserve Some No Plan And No Purpose Time.
Seldom is there anyone else telling you that you have to keep up that “rabbit with its tail on fire pace.” It’s you telling you that you don’t deserve some downtime. That if you aren’t working or at least thinking about something useful, you are slacking. Then “WHOH! You start throwing the “L” word around…”L.A.Z.Y. “
You aren’t being lazy. You need some time with no plan and no purpose because you’re living a life, creating a life, and investing in a life. Give yourself some time with no plan and no purpose, and you will be amazed at how much you can accomplish and how good life can be. You’ve got this!
